Author Jonathan Butlin

A metal fanatic since the age of 15, I am now a considerably long way away from that age and still headbanging (lumbago permitting). If it is noisy, over-the-top, faintly ridiculous, and generally interesting I will probably like it. I like to think of myself as a bit of a philosopher, but that is mostly an excuse to sit around doing nothing. Founding member and guitar player in Detrimentum (also played bass on the new album, but my hands weren't really ape-like enough). I'm also a fantasy/sci-fi/history geek and have attempted to write some of that too; so far I have never been accused of `literature'.

Devangelic – Phlegethon (Comatose Music)

It is fair to say that Devangelic’s sophomore release `Phlegethon’ is one heavy album. Meatier than a 48 ounce steak between two giant hams, this is a truly crushing, devastating album. This is a prime cut, if you will, of… Continue Reading →

Deny The Urge – As Darkness Falls (G.U.C.)

`As Darkness Falls’ is German death metal fanatics Deny The Urge’s third album, and it really does pack quite a punch. I’ve heard a LOT of death metal over the years, particularly so-called `old school’ death metal; very often it… Continue Reading →

Morfin – Consumed By Evil (F.D.A. Records)

`Consumed By Evil’ is the second full length release from Californian Death Metal stalwarts Morfin, and sounds just like it could have been released in the early 90’s. In fact, if someone had said to me that this album was… Continue Reading →

Resurgency – No Worlds…Nor Gods Beyond ( FDA Records)

No Worlds… is the second album by underground Greek death metal stalwarts Resurgency, and a mighty album it is indeed. Although Athens is a pretty sunny place most of the time, from listening to this album I would suspect that… Continue Reading →

Rude – Remnants… (F.D.A. Rekotz)

`Remnants…’ is the second full length studio album from Californian crew Rude, and it is quite a bone-crushing release I can tell you! Forget sunshine, forget glamour; this band sound like they live in a cold, dark, filth-smeared wasteland. This,… Continue Reading →

October 31 – Metal Massacre 31 (Hells Headbangers)

This latest offering from classic heavy metal fanatics October 31 is a slightly different affair to normal. Rather than being a new studio album with their own songs, the group have decided to pay tribute to the legendary heavy metal… Continue Reading →

Minotaur Head – S/T (War Anthem Records)

This slab of grimness is the debut album of pan-European supergroup Minotaur Head; containing members of various Swedish and Dutch underground extreme metal bands, that any extreme metal fan worth his or her salt will have heard of: Hail Of… Continue Reading →

Vuolla – Blood. Stone. Sun. Down. (Schwarzdorn)

This is Vuolla’s first full length release, and it is indeed an epic affair. If I told you that Vuolla were from a rural town in Southern Finland, surrounded by lakes, I wonder if you could guess the genre? Give… Continue Reading →

Graveyard – For Thine is the Darkness (War Anthem Records)

Some underground bands manage to only throw out one release every few years, such is the nature of balancing work, life and a band that is labour of love/expensive hobby. Other bands somehow manage to be incredibly prolific, despite not… Continue Reading →

Dream Death – Dissemination (Rise Above)

Many, many extreme metal bands claim to be `cult’, or even `kult’ but so few ever live up to that description. Dream Death however, have no such qualms. This is a true, legendary, underground cult band from Pittsburgh who have… Continue Reading →

Villainy – Villainy II: Dim (Listenable)

I’m new to this band, but after giving their second full-length a few listens, I fully intend to keep on top of their progress. Villainy (not to be confused with an Alternative Rock band from New Zealand), are a band… Continue Reading →

Incarceration – Sacrifice (Dawnbreed Records)

This 3 track EP literally screams `Old School Death Metal’, from the spiky logo, in a gothic looking font, and the grisly, black and white cover art to the little inverted cross underneath the track list! Musically it does not… Continue Reading →
