NunsNunslaughter! You don’t get a much more prolific underground extreme metal band than Nunslaughter. Since 1987 these Cleveland steamers have been grinding out some of the best and most blasphemous thrashing death metal with sole original member, vocalist ‘Don Of The Dead’ forever leading the charge against all things churchy.

Amongst a fuck-ton (imperial not metric) of splits, EPs, 7” and live recordings Nunslaughter have only put out four previous full length LPs – their last being 2007’s ‘Hex’. They are a collectors wet dream / utter nightmare depending on your view point and wallet thickness (check out their discography on Metal Archives) so it caused a minor nerdgasm to see that ‘Angelic Dread’ is a two CD set with the second disc containing sixteen re-recorded songs previously available only on 7″ vinyl. Tasty or what?

So what’s the album like? Straight forward, anti-religious, crusty blackened thrashing furious death metal….. that’s what. Although the band themselves call it ‘Devil Metal’… fair enough. This album has fifteen original tracks, all totally ripping with a bare arsed, organic production and the sort of drum sound that’d give Lars Ulrich and embolism plus Zack Massacre’s precise barbed wire riffing (shades of Possessed & Repulsion) sounds just as abrasive as it does in his other band, sleaze-bags Nekrofilth.

Every time you put on a Nunslaughter record you know precisely what you’re gonna get – progressive and technical this certainly ain’t – old school punked up, crusty and catchy is what these guys do best. Filthy devil-worshiping sonic violence with not a single track over 3.5 minutes long, I defy anyone to get bored of this. It’s a fun record – full of headbanging rhythms, primitive, bestial riffs and growling vocals.

Seriously, what more could you want?
