Having been introduced to metal by my older brother (who was an 80s thrasher with a love for NWOBHM), I caught the metal bug by association from a very early age. My tastes have changed a lot over the years, beginning with Metallica and Iron Maiden and culminating in just about everything extreme and underground. My main loves are slimy/occult death metal, teeth-grinding/neck-rending thrash, frostbitten black metal, crushing doom and blasting grindcore – what’s not to love there? I’ve worked in the music industry as a music buyer for an online retailer for the best part of 10 years so have a wide range of knowledge of most genres of music, but metal has always been my bag. I’ve also been writing on and off about metal for many years now, reviewing for various zines including a stint with Ave Noctum’s previous incarnation as Metal Team UK. I’ve always loved to tout out the underground metal scene like some filth dealer in an Amsterdam back street (but without the STDs). In my spare time I like to add good shit to my ever growing and unstable CD collection, dabble in smelly vinyl and dust off my dubbed tapes from my trading days, hoping with clenched bum that they aren’t inexplicably chewed to buggery. I’m born and bred in Oxfordshire, have Danish ancestry, like shit jokes, play guitar fast, like my beer cold (unless I’m on ales, in which case – don’t mind) and can usually be found dressed in all black with an unreadable logo emblazoned across my chest.

The Order of Apollyon – The Sword and The Dagger (Listenable)

Five years since their debut release, 2015 sees the 2nd album of The Order of Apollyon eventually rear its gnarly head. After a huge upheaval in line-up (co-founder Dan Wilding is now with Carcass, former Akercocke man Peter Benjamin has… Continue Reading →

Hybrid Sheep – Free From The Clutches of Gods (Tenacity Music)

Having put out two previous EPs since forming in 2008, ‘Free From The Clutches of Gods’ is the debut full length release of this French band. Described as ‘modern death metal’, there sure is a lot of US-styled deathcore in… Continue Reading →

Archgoat – The Apocalyptic Triumphator (Debemur Morti)

If one thing is to be certain when you hear of a new Archgoat release, you know you’re in for a sonic battering. Famed for their notorious 1993 release ‘Angelcunt (Tales of Desecration)’, these Finns were adored and reviled in… Continue Reading →

Satan’s Host – Pre-dating God (Parts 1 & 2) (Moribund)

OK, for such an epic release, first a brief history lesson. I’ve heard a few bits and pieces from Satan’s Host before, but it wasn’t until I did a little research into the band for the purposes of this review… Continue Reading →

Volahn – Aq’ab’al (Iron Bonehead)

Well this album has made 2015 begin with an unexpectedly strong start! Volahn hail from California, and belong to the shadowy Black Twilight Circle – arguably USBM’s very own version of Les Légions Noires. Musically you can hear the French… Continue Reading →

Winter Deluge – As The Earth Fades Into Obscurity (Frozen Blood Industries)

Originally released on CD by the band themselves a couple of years ago, the debut album of Winter Deluge sees new distro/label Frozen Blood Industries pick up the release for a tasty vinyl re-issue. Not knowing a huge amount about… Continue Reading →

Veilburner – The Three Lightbearers (Obscure Divinity Records)

Citing the likes of Nile, Cannibal Corpse and Behemoth amongst their inspirations, this stuck out like a sore thumb amongst my review pile for getting fast tracking to my ol’ lug holes with priority. Veilburner’s debut album is packed with… Continue Reading →

Darkspace – III I (Avantgarde)

Ahh Darkspace. This is one release I’d be waiting on for a very long time (since their last album ‘III’ in 2008, in fact), and finally here it is in all its glory. For those who are unaware, Darkspace are… Continue Reading →

Pestilential Shadows – Ephemeral (Séance Records)

Having been in existence for 11 years now, and with this being their fifth full length album, my own experience of Pestilential Shadows’ work has been as fleeting as their new album’s title – having heard a mere track on… Continue Reading →

Dementia Senex – Heartworm (Drown Within)

An enjoyable spraying of tooth decay and phlegm here from this Italian five piece, who manage to marry the eerie rumble of ‘Inside the Torn Apart’/’Words from the Exit Wound’ era Napalm Death, the concussive melody of Cult of Luna… Continue Reading →

Arrogant Destruktor – Amidst The Blackest Void (Wolfspell Records)

Having had a taster of what these guys from Birmingham could do with their previous demo ‘Hate Legions Ride!’ right here on Ave Noctum earlier this year, I was more than happy to see their debut full length appear on… Continue Reading →

Mysticum – Planet Satan (Peaceville)

Mysticum are a band who made their name off the back of one album, an album which took industrial soundscapes and infused cosmic black metal into it, a cubic fuckton of evil and an overdose of class A drug abuse,… Continue Reading →
