Blasting out of Portland, Oregon come Coffin Rot with their debut full length album “A Monument To The Dead”. Not a bad turn around as they only formed in 2017. In that time they’ve released two demos & a split (with Molder) and have honed their old school death metal craft to a fine edge.

Coffin Rot have a really thrashy, no frills sound with plenty of chugging guitar riffs (“Saw Blade Suicide”) amongst the gore soaked barbarism on display here. In fact, apart from the reverb drenched vocals, they remind me quite a bit of early Kreator / Exumer and that is always a good thing.

“A Monument For The Dead” is a really interesting album, and I don’t mean that in a hyper technical, beard stroking and wafty way (cough cough Cynic cough) but in a cool, meaty barbaric way and the brilliant way in which the band blend the thrashier parts along with some monster heaviness (“Forced Self Consumption”) and full on death metal attacks (“Mechancal Separation”) will ensure plenty of repeat spins.

Album closer “Coffin Rot” is a grindingly slow (by their standards) Bolt Thrower-esque track that still manages to sound savage A.F. with a stonking couple of bulldozer riffs.

Coffin Rot have nailed it with this really hefty debut. Eight quality tracks, all with their own identity and dripping with gore. Just what you want from a proper death metal band.
