As the UK basks temporarily in a heatwave, what better thing to listen to than “eight ice-cold tracks, filled with gloomy atmosphere, bringing the fragile beauty and hostility of Siberian nature to life”. This is Grima’s third album release.

“Siberian Sorrow” starts proceedings. Yes, there is underlying melancholy but what is striking is the imperious atmosphere. There is a folk-like feel with a traditional Eastern instrument and sound, but this adds spice to the epic power. “Siberian Sorrow” moves between predominantly harsh fields and quieter moments like transforming seasons and weather. I was sorry when it ended. Rasping venom and harshness continue the icy theme with “Shrouded in Darkness”. There are confused sounds in the background, enhancing another epic and lofty piece and adding intrigue into the process. The mix of chaos and majesty is impressive. Grima, which comprises brothers Morbius and Vilhelm, take us through the Siberian dark woods, adding touches which make the experience flavoured with their homeland.

Magnificent is the only word I can use to describe “Leshiy”. Once again Grima sweep through dark forests, taking us along with them on their punitive and inspiring journey. It is spine-chilling and expansive. The mood transforms briefly with a melancholic instrumental, before “Enisey” restores power-laden darkness, and “Blizzard” chills us to the bone with its intensity and harshness. The structures are never uniform however. There are always twists, whether it’s symphonic, ethnic, melancholic or reflective, but it all comes back to harsh power. I suppose this is the equivalent of UK’s Fen, but this is unrelentingly vast. ”Blizzard” is followed by another suitably crushing piece “Howl At Night”. Running through it and bringing it to a close is an accordeonic touch, which adds ethnic flavour to go with the atmospheric power. The final instrumental piece then reflects the more tranquil side of nature, which is such a force throughout this album.

I cannot think when I last heard such an atmospheric album as this. “Will of the Primordial” swept me away. The sophisticated structures create a kaleidoscope of intensely epic, dark and powerful soundscapes. Outstanding.
