Following the release of their debut ‘Dromomania’, Italian doomsters, Le Scimmie, took a four year break, however, it’s more than apparent that the trio were anything but idle; 2016 sees them with a major change in their small line-up and new four-track album ‘Colostrum’.
The album opens with a 14-minute goliath of a song, ushering the listener in with ambient and desolate atmospheres, before the first riff emerges. It’s halfway into the song that things get genuinely interesting, as the mood switches from pensive meditation to one of a brown acid trip. Fluctuating psychedelic key changes pound alongside crushing heaviness for a mind bending musical experience.
The rest of this record utilises both aforementioned musical traits to their full extent; slow burner ‘Triticum’ finds itself sandwiched between two trippy chug-a-thons. The continuous changes in tempo and dynamic make this record an interesting beast to try to understand. Ultimately, the fluctuation in mood and pace is what will grab your attention, but the infectious riffs are what will implore you to stick around. A fine piece of musicianship, and one that fans of Ufomammut and Sleestak will seriously dig.
