We have all at some point in our lives made the harrowing struggle into the office on vile Hangover Monday, with a cumbersome black cloud of despair hanging over us, wondering how on earth we are going to cope with the next 8 hours of life ahead. Apparently, so have Italian Death Metal five piece Resurrecturis, as is described in their latest offering Nazienda.
Nazienda (a fusion of the words “Nazi” and the Italian “azienda”,meaning company or corporation) is, in short, a concept album following one man’s typically stressful day at the office, with each track describing a pivotal moment in the day. The harsh irritancy of the 6:30am alarm going off, the aggravating mid-morning meeting at 10:30 right through to collapsing on the sofa at 23:31. If you’ve ever wanted to listen to something that perfectly summarises yet another tiresome day at the office, then Nazienda is for you.
Nazienda is one incredibly varied album. Vocalist Enrico Tiberi’s talents are quite astounding on the album, ranging from harsh, grinding growls to beautiful, relaxing, Chris Cornell esque singing. The whole album ranges hugely from gentle, melodic tracks to aggressive powerful prog-death which sounds pretty much like an anxiety attack. In terms of references, Resurrecturis appear to have drawn influence from right across the alternative spectrum from well renowned heavyweights such as Tool and Gojira right through to anarchy kings Raging Speedhorn.
If you’re a fan of albums that stick to one specific genre throughout then Nazienda won’t be for you, as this thoroughly captivating album is vastly varied and unique in styles. The album breaks free from the mould of conventional metal on several occasions throughout. Fifth track 10:30 Animals in the Meeting Room for example, features the vocal talents of several exotic animals during the meeting room chaos and ninth track 16:59 The Thought That Something Went Wrong With My Life is the recording of a rather stressful phone call, showing how our protagonist’s current career is really testing his patience.
Nazienda is an incredibly original and thought provoking album. Resurrecturis have clearly not just limited themselves to death metal with this release and it has paid off, as you’re guaranteed to not hear another album quite as dark and innovative as this. Nazienda is basically a wonderfully weird album that is perfect for anyone who has had a day at the office which results in having bouts of homicidal rage.
