Well it’s all change in the Burning Point camp…actually it’s not ALL change – they have a new vocalist…which makes it a major change…or, if vocals aren’t that important to you, it’s just “a change” really isn’t it…shall I start again?? Well, there’s change in the Burning Point camp (better?), quite an important change too, especially when you find out that it’s former Battle Beast vocalist Nitte Valo that has taken on the role, and anyone familiar with that band will know what a varied and powerful vocalist she is! So, as an introduction to the band now fronted by Nitte, Burning Point have recorded five new songs and re-recorded six older ones to show off her vocal prowess on old and new material.
And I must say, it has raised the band from very competent Power Metallers in the Hammerfall vein, to something just that bit more unique and intriguing! Don’t get me wrong, former vocalist (and still current guitarist) Pete Ahonen was no slouch in the pipes department, and Burning Point have always been one of the better traditional Power Metal bands out there, but now the already punchy choruses seem just that bit more vibrant and elevated. ‘Signs Of Danger’ is a great example – the original was a good enough track but now even the guitar-work seems to have a crisper, more urgent feel to it on this re-recording. And the re-recorded chorus absolutely soars! Of all the re-recorded tracks, I must say that without exception, they are just that little bit more vibrant, energetic and just a hint more polished than the originals. They are all exactly what a fan of the band would hope they would be when a new vocalist of this calibre is introduced.
With the new tracks, the band have clearly tried to present all sides of their repertoire, and the Metal on offer has elements that range from Axel Rudi Pell and Glenmore, through Vainglory and edging toward Rawhedd Rexx and Sinbreed at the heavier, faster end. All delivered with a heightened energy and drive that really does feel like a new dawn for the band. For example, from ‘In The Shadows’ through to ‘I’ve Had Enough (Into The Fire)’, the musicianship is powerful, tight and interesting, and vocals delivered with utter conviction and passion.
So, shrewd move Mr. Ahonen, you can concentrate on your already impressive guitar licks and leave the vocals to someone who you know will give it 100% every time, lifting your songs just that bit higher than before…in more ways than one! I regret to admit that in a very crowded genre I could take or leave Burning Point before, they were good, but just didn’t have that edge, that extra something about their sound to make me sit up and really take notice. They do now! And I look forward to first album proper with Nitte some time in 2016.
