Originally formed in 2012, this Slovenian Doom Metal band had an all-female line-up, something that changed when current lead guitarist, Blaz Tansek joined last year. This 4 track EP has a rerecorded song from their 2013 demo with the remainder being new.
Opening track “Inan'” has a good strong beat thumped out by Mihaela Zitko while Ema Babosek and Blaz Tansek churn out some solid mid-paced riffs that are heavier than they are fast.
The ultra-smooth “Frozen Velvet” starts off with Nina Spruk’s sultry voice singing over an acoustic guitar that gently distorts itself to have a heavier feel to its riffing, before it subdues itself to keep the tempo slow with the vocals as the focal point until Blaz’s lead takes off and hits some high notes in much the same way Nina does earlier in the song.
I’ve no idea why, but for some reason I was expecting Mist to have a bit of a FoG (Fear of God) feel to it, and “Under The Night Sky” is possibly as close as they’ll get with Nina and Ema entwining vocals in much the same way Dawn Crosby did, but with nowhere near as much abstract trippy weirdness to it.
Neza Pecan fills out the doomy sound on her bass on “Phobia” while the lumbering guitars plod along with the steady drum beat allowing the lead to soar above at a higher pitch without needing to raise the pace at all.
If slow doomy Sabbathesque rock with good female vocals is your thing, you should really enjoy Mist.
