InfernusAh blasphemy…how I’ve missed you!

In a scene increasingly dominated by black metal bands on a mission to push a more progressive and folk-fueled side (or indeed, try to convince you that they aren’t “black metal” at all), it’s nice to be assaulted once in a while by some good old fashioned, demon-infused, nun-bothering necro fury.

This is where U.S. black/thrash metallers Infernus storm in. Their 2nd full-length album is called ‘Grinding Christian Flesh’…The cover features a sabbatical goat feeding a bishop into a meat grinder…and it sounds exactly how you would expect it to.

Thank fucking Ch#*st for that!!!

From the opening sounds of torture, to the Inquisition and Horna covers that conclude it, ‘Grinding Christian Flesh’ is deliciously vile and frantic stuff. Every track is a toe-tapping, head-banging delight, with the thrashier numbers being the most impressive. We have the utterly rampant ‘Verminnihilation’, the Deicide-chorused ‘Hang the Gutted Christians’, and the goat shagging assault of ‘Perversion Reliquary’.

Elsewhere, there is a death metal edge to the proceedings, and the hint of influence from Behexen and Bathory, especially in tracks such as ‘Worms of the Casket’ and ‘Candles, Horns and Tongues’. There is even a nice twiddly bass solo, providing an extra tangy element to the gluttony of ‘Sodomfeast’. Glorious stuff, but occasionally the drums tend to sound a bit “cardboard”, and the sinister incantation in ‘Lay Your Souls Bare Before the Glory Of Satan’ comes across like a couple of  west country farmers declaring their love for cider! But maybe that’s just me! Anyway, I’m nitpicking, this is a totally refreshing blast of vicious metal with unholy rasping vocals from Hredthel, and some scorching guitar work from Crucifixus. In today’s metal climate, it’s albums like this that make you realise why you got into black metal in the first place, and with all the tinkering that is evident in the genre, this is like a breath of “fresh” air.

Infernus are not trying to reinvent the wheel, and aside from the odd moment of classical guitar, ‘Grinding Christian Flesh’ is an obnoxious, rip-roaring slice of black/thrash metal. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Hail to that!!!
