Blowing off the cobwebs of your stereo and denim are Sweden’s Night, their previous two 7 inch singles were an indication of their sound, their style and this is the first full length album that I have really been waiting for ever since the 7 inches landed for review a little while back.
The only thing that may put you off is the vocals, whilst I love them, a lot of people won’t as they are harsh like Bon Scott and UDO mixing it with Dag Hell Hofer of Bullet (Swe). Other than this, Night keep it very simple and very effective. Teasing tried and tested ideas come up and spring into songs such as ‘Hang Them High’ and its rather apt that I write this review close to Guy Fawkes night as that’s what the single ‘Gunpowder Treason’ is all about. This one really stands out on its own as a cool album track and others that are designed to tempt your wallet include ‘Out of the Ashes’.
The band state that this is 80’s hard rock made before 1981, which is right on the money. The band image is very retro, the album artwork is a little tongue in cheek but then some would say so is the music, but that’s what this band are all about, it has soul. Presented in a really nice digipack and also available on hallowed vinyl, there is genuine premise about this. The whole album was recorded live, which result in a good recording as it captures the spirit of the music, but I do think it sounds little unfinished in places. Night and this style of music should really be taken with a touch more seriousness than the “scene” seems to depict nowadays, it sounds genuine rather than contrived retro and this is awesome hard rock and a worthy album to add to your collection and a late November tour with Ghost B.C. will only heighten their status to everyone, good luck to them.
