WolveSpirit lure you in with the promise of ‘bone grinding rock’ and psychedelic, brighter than the sun album artwork. From the way this record is packaged it’s easy to be fooled into thinking you’re going to get some chunky, fuzz filled stoner rock – this could not be further from the truth.
German superstar engineer Michael Wagener mixed ‘Dreamcatcher’ and considering he has worked with the likes of Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne and Skid Row, it is easy to believe that WolveSpirit encapsulate a huge sound. However, this album does not live up to the hype that surrounds it. It boasts of heavy drums and guitars and a huge bassline, when in fact all that is present is a barely audible backing track to vocalist Debbie’s shrill caterwauling. The music would have benefited from being placed higher in the mix during production; however, this would have made little difference in drowning out the dulcet tones of their front woman who sounds much like a distorted version of Ari Koivunen.
The band are German natives, so obviously English is not their first language, however, no matter what dialect their lyrics are put into they fail to make any sense. Take, for instance, the following line from ‘From Venus I Came’ – “Rollercoaster up and down, where’s my inner sound? Remind my soul I’m not from here, I wanna go home”. What on earth is that supposed to mean? It is likely the band do not know themselves and this is much a case of trying to be deep without any clear direction. Come for the artwork, stay for the laughs.
