Founded in 2009, Italian symphonic metal band Sinheresy have released “The Spiders and The Butterfly”, their debut EP. With a dual but predominantly female-fronted vocal attack, comparison has been drawn with Nightwish and Within Temptation. It’s true that there’s a recognisable template here. “Symphonic” covers some of what I heard but if I were to throw in words to summarise it, at least based on the first track “Temptation Flame”, it would be “power metal”, “gothic” and “melodic”. It all sits together very nicely, the vocals complement the pumping instrumentals and vice-versa. The chorus is strong, the timing is good and the movement is confident and expansive. I sense a confidence about this. Each element rises nicely and the song flows without ever threatening to shatter plates, hearts or anything else. The problem is where it goes after that. The answer is nowhere new. Two thrusting songs of a slightly darker but generally similar ilk follow, then there’s a dark gothic ballad “Forever Us” featuring both vocalists which never took off in spite of the posturing. “When Darkness Falls” again has a gothic element to as you might gather from its title but instead of flowering fully, develops into a somewhat bland and repetitive melodic metal number.
I just can’t imagine that anyone is going to fall off the edge of their seat in excitement on hearing this. There are enough good bands already out there who produce this kind of uplifting melodic metal. That’s not to say that Sinheresy are a bad band. I do think they do need to re-think their strategy and give themselves a more personalised identity. The power metal melodies and the female vocal talents are there. They need to knock us out, and after a very promising start, they didn’t sustain the power on “The Spiders and The Butterfly”.
