Returning after their triumphant 2008 release ‘Sons of Thunder’, Driver is a hard rocking, melodic metal band featuring the “voice of melodic metal” Rob Rock. Formed out of the ashes of the M.A.R.S. Project Driver super group from the 1980’s, current Driver members include powerhouse guitarist and producer Roy Z. In the production stakes, vintage is the key word. Roy Z has worked his magic once again, it still sounds fresh, but its classic heavy metal.

Rousing anthems like ‘Hollywood Shooting Star’ and ‘Return to the Sky’ hit all the notes that accomplished musicians and artists should do, Rock’s lyrical content is uplifting whilst still staying true to his beliefs and ideals. Engulfing power continues with ‘Cry of the Wounded’ and this takes me back to some of those classic songs you heard all that time ago, certainly the same feeling, but that is not to say that this is dated, it’s not, the songs actually sound a little timeless and have the ability to provide a cool sense of longevity. Driver control the flow and release the moment when they need too, these are level headed song writers and their experience really shines through. I cannot say I like everything on the album, ‘Always On My Mind’ is a little weak for me, but the remaining 9 or 10 tracks (depends if you get the European release or not) are strong examples of music that fills your soul, you can either get really into it but conversely you can really just chill and Basque in some of this entertaining genius, with a few Dio or even Crimson Glory references thrown in for good measure, you know that means classic music.

There is no chance of this band selling out, I really feel energised by this album, and it’s certainly welcomed, its classic metal, hard rock, whatever you call it. Don’t expect extremity, but do expect beautifully crafted arrangements encompassing strong melody, ripping guitar work, this album delivers musicians that have the ability to lift anyone’s spirits even if you are having the worse day of your life, that is the mark of a special release.
