Formed last year and featuring musicians from Immortal Rites, Dawn of Dreams and Apophis, these German’s have a passion for the great genre that is old school death metal. Obviously, modern champions like Entrails and genre defining bands like Nihilist and Dismember are noted inclusions in the bands influence. Immediately I am drawn to the album artwork, albeit not in black and white (like most of the newer bands do to be considered classic and old!), this is rather refreshing, and revolting at the same time, hats off to Spanish artist Juanjo Castellano, excellent!

Perhaps it is just because I am a sucker for this genre, or perhaps it’s because I have lived with this release for a short while, but I like what I hear, but I don’t like seeing comments referring to Revel In Flesh as a “tribute” act, that is disrespectful, no matter how close to those original pioneers they are in terms of style and delivery. Mastered by maestro Dan Swanö (yes him again!), you gain more Sunlight Studio-like tone, it’s that guitar sound that does it for me, the crushing annihilation is complete and ‘Deathevokation’ is the perfect soundtrack to that phenomenon, although I would have to say the Revel in Flesh have just enough to rise above the complacent scene that seems to be churning out bands left right and centre that don’t have anything new and inviting to offer the listener. Take the time to dissect tracks like ‘Bloodfeast’ and the thundering opener ‘Culpa et Inferna’, then you have the basis of a pretty solid album, concentrating on a classic rotten death metal sound.

Revel In Flesh pay homage to a classic genre, and rather than become another mere tribute act, they rip through the fabric of your speaker cones and invite you into their rotten world with a very heavy delivery of vibrant SweDeath style metal from Germany.
